Monoscour® Gravity Filter

GRAVER has hundreds of Monoscour filter installations worldwide and more than half a century of experience serving many industries.  Graver’s Monoscour® is a heavy duty, high rate gravity filter designed for treating high turbidity loads and sticky particulates such as those typically encountered following chemical treatment with polymers and coagulants. The Monoscour is particularly useful in wastewater applications, lime softening applications, cooling tower side stream filtration and all other gravity filter applications where high filtering rates are desirable.

The Monoscour filter is fully automatic and incorporates a self contained backwash compartment which eliminates the need for backwash pumps and tanks.  It also includes a vigorous air scour step to efficiently clean the filter media while minimizing the volume of backwash water consumed.
Filter media generally consists of a dual layer (12″ to 24″ each) of fine sand and coarse anthracite.  The sand layer provides the polishing function while the anthracite layer provides both roughing and depth filtration for
high capacity. Routine backwashing maintains the bed strata with the lighter anthracite layer above the sand. This configuration provides two stage filtration in a cost effective package. Other filtration media are also available.

Monoscour filters are shipped in single piece construction for diameters up to 14′ with either single or dual filtering compartments. Field erected units have been supplied with diameters up to 39′ with up to three separate filtering compartments. The multi-compartment design stores less backwash water since only 1/2 or 1/3 of the filter area is backwashed at any given time. This design reduces the straight height of the filter and the required inlet head, which (based on the hydraulic requirements) also reduces the height of an upstream clarifier such as the GRAVER Reactivator®. It also minimizes the instantaneous backwash rate which further reduces the size of sumps and backwash water recovery equipment.

Typical Applications

  • Reactivator or lamella clarifier effluent polishing
  • Cooling tower sidestream filtration
  • Iron & Manganese removal
  • Direct filtration with or without in-line coagulation
  • Industrial waste waters
  • Potable water
  • Reverse osmosis pretreatment

 MonoScour Advantages

  • Heavy duty industrial construction designed for high flow rate applications with difficult suspended solids loads
  • The integral backwash storage compartment eliminates the need for backwash pumps and tanks
  • Proprietary non-clogging AWS, plastic strainers with air metering tube provide optimum flow distribution and collection
  • Air scour assisted backwash minimizes the volume of waste water and increases filter run length
  • Design does not require a water siphon to initiate the backwash sequence
  • Backwash can be operator initiated by push button at any time
  • Elevated effluent discharge permits the use of above grade clearwells or direct discharge to cooling tower basins

  • Standard Features

    • Steel units incorporate 1/4″ steel plate throughout as a minimum
    • Structural steel beam reinforcement at compartment boundaries
      Coal tar epoxy lining
    • Impact and corrosion resistant, FDA approved, molded polypropylene strainer construction
    • Flow split box included for multi-cell installations
    • Fully automatic operation with standard industrial grade PLC controls
    • Flow splitter

  • Available Options

    • Concrete shell design and alternate materials of construction (such as stainless steel) and coatings
    • Municipal design with open air break between filter cell(s) and backwash storage compartment
    • Simultaneous air & water backwash
    • Packaged clarifier/Monoscour filter units designed to treat up to 300 gpm in a single factory assembly
    • In-house laboratory analysis for equipment optimization
    • Backwash compartment covers
    • Field erection of knocked-clown units
    • Automatic chemical feed equipment
